In einem ambienten System bilden mehrere Objekte eine Einheit, wobei der Begriff "Objekt" sehr weit gefasst ist und von einem Sensor bis hin zu einem Laptop reichen kann. Ein ambientes System besitzt die Fähigkeit, die aus der realen Umwelt aufgenommenen Daten zu analysieren und flexibel darauf zu reagieren. Es passt sich außerdem den individuellen Bedürfnissen des Nutzers an und kann neue Geräte nahtlos in das System integrieren.
