Unter Flexibilität versteht man die Fähigkeit, auf unterschiedliche Anforderungen zeitnah zu reagieren. In der modularen Produktion kann die Flexibilität an verschiedenen Stellen auftreten. Zum Beispiel kann es Flexibilität in der Produktion, innerhalb eines Moduls oder in Bezug auf Aufgaben geben. Mengenflexibilität ist die Fähigkeit, die Ausbringungsmenge schnell zu variieren. Produktionsflexibilität beinhaltet die Änderung des Typs innerhalb eines bestehenden Teilemixes, während Produktflexibilität das Hinzufügen neuer Teile zum Teilemix beinhaltet. Flexibilität in Bezug auf die Systemgestaltung umfasst Maschinenflexibilität, Materialhandhabungsflexibilität, Prozessflexibilität und Erweiterungsflexibilität. Die betriebliche Flexibilität bezieht sich auf die Vielfalt der möglichen Produktionsmethoden, während sich die Flexibilität der Arbeitsabläufe auf die Vielfalt der möglichen Wege durch ein Produktionssystem für gleichbleibende Ergebnisse bezieht.
