On-Board-Units (OBU) sind intelligente Funktionseinheiten, die in Kraftfahrzeuge eingebaut werden. Ihr Hauptzweck ist die automatische Erkennung und Abrechnung von Mautgebühren für die während der Fahrt zurückgelegten Strecken. OBUs sind aber auch darüber hinaus vielseitig einsetzbar. Sie können für die Navigation, die Routenplanung sowie für die Aufzeichnung und Speicherung von Fahrzeugdiagnose- und Notfalldaten eingesetzt werden. Darüber hinaus ermöglichen OBUs nahtlose Kommunikationsprotokolle, einschließlich Car-to-Car Communication (C2C), Car-to-Roadside Communication (C2R) und Car-to-Infrastructure Communication (C2I). In diesen Konstellationen stellt die On-Board-Unit die Kommunikation mit den Roadside Units (RSU) her.
