REST ist ein architektonischer Stil für Webanwendungen, der unabhängig von spezifischen Datenformaten ist. REST basiert auf den vier HTTP-Methoden GET, POST, UPDATE und DELETE. Zusätzlich zur Verwendung von HTTP kann REST auch mit CoAP (Constraint Application Protocol) genutzt werden, was die direkte Integration von eingebetteten Systemen mit begrenzten Ressourcen in REST-basierte Anwendungen ermöglicht. Im Bereich des Internet of Things dient REST zur Umsetzung plattformunabhängiger APIs (Application Programming Interfaces).
