Jeder kann einen eigenen Ableger eines Git-Repositories starten, auch bekannt als "Fork", da alle öffentlichen Git-Projekte unter einer Open-Source-Lizenz stehen. Auf diese Weise kann jeder unabhängig an einem Projekt arbeiten und seine eigene Version erstellen, bevor er sie wieder in das ursprüngliche Projekt einbringt, indem er einen sogenannten "Pull Request" stellt. Alternativ kann man auch eine eigenständige Variante des Projekts verbreiten.
