Health Level 7 (HL7) ist eine Gruppe von internationalen Standards, die den Austausch von Daten zwischen Computersystemen von Gesundheitsorganisationen erleichtern. Der Begriff HL7 bezieht sich sowohl auf die Organisation, die für die Entwicklung und Unterstützung dieser Standards verantwortlich ist, als auch auf die Versionen 2.x und 3 der Standards sowie auf andere von lokalen HL7-Organisationen in mehr als 35 Ländern entwickelte Standards. Die Zahl 7 im Namen HL7 entspricht der Schicht 7 des ISO/OSI-Referenzmodells für Kommunikation (ISO7498-1) und bedeutet, dass der Standard die Kommunikation auf Anwendungsebene spezifiziert.
