Der Begriff "Upstream" kann je nach Kontext unterschiedliche Bedeutungen haben. Er kann sich auf die zentrale Kubernetes-Codebasis oder das Quellcode-Repository beziehen, von dem ein anderes Repository abgezweigt wurde. Innerhalb der Kubernetes-Community bezieht sich "Upstream" in der Regel auf die Kubernetes-Kerncodebasis, die als Grundlage für andere Tools und Code im Ökosystem dient. Community-Mitglieder können vorschlagen, eine Funktion in den Upstream-Bereich zu verschieben, was bedeutet, dass sie in die Kern-Codebasis integriert wird, anstatt sich auf ein Plugin oder ein Drittanbieter-Tool zu verlassen. In GitHub oder Git bezieht sich "Upstream" üblicherweise auf das Quell-Repository, während das Forked-Repository als Downstream bezeichnet wird.
