ZigBee ist eine drahtlose Kommunikationstechnologie, die als Erweiterung zu WLAN (IEEE 802.11) und Bluetooth (IEEE 802.15.1) entwickelt wurde. Ihr Zweck besteht darin, Sensoren und Haushaltsgeräte auf kurze Entfernungen von 10 bis 100 Metern miteinander zu verbinden. Dieser Standard konzentriert sich insbesondere auf drahtlose Nahbereichsnetzwerke mit geringen Datenraten. Der Frequenzbereich liegt bei 2,4 GHz, ähnlich wie bei WLAN und Bluetooth.
